Good buy! Tiny pooches were used to going outside, but winter presents problems: too little to get thru snow, tiny feet freeze to easy, fall down steps in ice & can’t get back to door, etc. Got this because had the removable tray for easier cleaning! Pooches held it in hoping to go outside but finally peed next to it tho. Cleaned that up & laid a pee soaked paper towel on grass matt to give them a hint. Con’t to potty next to it for 2 wks. I was prepared tho! Put a thin 5’x6’ rubber mat down under & around the potty tray from very beginning so no worries!Since they weren’t figuring it out tho; I needed to put a doggie playpen around it & keep them in playpen til they got this figured out before they start going pee in other places. They were confused by not going outside anymore & were acting scared. Put their bed in playpen w/ water/food & thought they’d get the idea now. Wrong! Still going right next to it. Then yesterday I got the bright idea to make the playpen much smaller so only about 16” space between their bed, food, water on one end & the potty on other end of playpen. Worked instantly! They didn’t want to go in the 16” right next to their bed & food & went “ON” the potty & got praised & there ya go! Gonna keep this confined set up about a week longer tho to make sure they keep up the good work & get lots more praises before taking the playpen down & trusting that they “understand” this is their new potty spot every time. They’ll do fine. They just didn’t understand the change in their routine from their previous potty training to go outside & not in house. They were acting like they’d done something wrong & were only going next to their new potty tray when I was out of the room & wouldn’t see them. They thought they were doing a no-no! Now that they have it figured out & getting praises, they’re back to happy again!A lot of reviewers said their dogs wouldn’t use this potty set up; so if you are considering getting one, keep in mind that you may need to help your dog “understand” what’s going on & be patient & do things to help them & not scold them. And put plastic sheet or something on the floor under & at least a couple feet around the new potty til your dog perfects the new change so you are less frustrated too! Maybe you won’t need to do these things, but if your dog is confused, these things will help get him over the learning curve & make ypur new doggy potty routine a successful one. I think this would have helped those other reviewers. As far smell; yes it does! But if you roll the mat up & slip it into a bucket (I have one just for cleaning the mat & for emptying the tray into for dumping also) & fill bucket 1/2 full of water w/ a capful of “concentrated” lysol (little brown bottle for about $4) & leave it a few min’s before flipping the rolled mat so other end can soak in water for few more min’s; then pour water from bucket into toilet while holding rolled matt still on bucket. Then start rinsing mat same way by filling bucket 1/2 full of clean water & flipping both ends of rolled mat in clean water, pouring water into toilet & repeat once more if you think it needs rinsed again. No mess, just a disinfected wet bucket to let air dry, & disinfected wet mat to put on patio or someplace to dry before putting back on potty tray. It helps to have 2 grass mats so one can be cleaned/dried while other is on potty tray. My local pet store has the grass pad fabric that can be cut to size of your tray & it’s inexpensive. Amazon has replacement grass mats too, & I’ve heard of some people using a piece of outdoor carpet (but I wouldn’t want to teach my dog to pee on carpet in case he didn’t know the difference between his potty carpet & my floor carpet- so good to be careful what you teach your dog). Hope this helps someone & their pooch! I’m loving the new potty for my little duo & know they’ll have a better winter w/o having to go outside,
